Audiobooks are dangerous

Jake Thoughts19 Feb 2021 21:42:31 -0500* Edit on 09 July 2022

I don't take any issue with audio books in general, however, I do take issue with listening to audio books *every time* you enter your car. But I suppose I'd prefer that over radio, at least in the case of audio books you can learn something, or gives you something to think about later. Technical audio books, I have less of an issue with since the purpose of it is purely informational, though who knows if someone reading it will help with the retention of it. My guess is 'no' but maybe it depends on the book. Oral traditions are a thing, after all, so maybe it isn't that bad. I still firmly believe that information should be put to paper, however, if you have a disability or something like that nature then audio books is totally fine with me as I've never seen an braille book before. I'd have to imagine they are hard to make or just in general expensive. I know I've never seen any at any book stores.

Previously, before this edit, I went on a rant about NPCs and how they don't have thought processes. I was not wrong in what I said, but how I said it was maybe not so great. The essence of it more or less went something like this "Audio books takes the NPCs attention span away and then they don't think for themselves." I don't hate NPCs, but I do wish they'd stop to have at least a daydream once in a while. Have original thoughts. Something like this. Audio books occupying someone's mind obviously isn't simulating mental activities but an engaging audio book might have make someone think about the story and how it might go. I know I've read books that I still think about from time to time. That is, I actually have thought about the book. I'm sure others that can fall into the category of 'NPC' do too.

What about the kind of person who must always have some kind of entertainment? No quiet time whatsoever, even in the car. This is why I say audio books are dangerous, absolutely no time to reflect on things. Maybe you can put the audio book into the background, I suppose.

I'll treat this as if the post isn't satirical. Audiobooks are a form of entertainment, books are a form of entertainment. There are shitty books as there are shitty forms of entertainment. Arguing against entertainment to larp as some ascetic monk (whilst having a webpage detailed to hell with a bunch of unnecessary shit) is shallow, and shows you haven't thought enough in your life to become bored of it. When you think and rethink and critically think for long enough, you'll eventually find that it gets boring. It feels weird to describe "thinking" as an activity, but when you do it at a certain level it becomes one (hereinafter termed "actively thinking"). I've been actively thinking my entire damn life, well before some people on the internet told me to do it (before I used the internet extensively, even); it might haev to do with genetics, but that's irrelevant and only stated for displaying authenticity. Your post makes it sound like you've recently started actively thinking for yourself, based on your overtly negative perception of people who don't as much as you do. You also deem yourself "not an NPC", but given that you are conscious of the fact that the NPC meme is a thing, that you've admitted to watching Like Smith, and that you act like a generic teenager with a boner for HTML and 4chan, you are barely above the people who'll only ever follow instructions and reccomendations their entire lives. Who knows if people get above that? I've never seen it happen, but I'm not on the lookout either. You've got a nice website, but you aren't special for it. You're still a part of a crowd that would be with everyone else you look down on had you not found a certain YouTuber or a certain website.

Ok, I doubt you'll return to read this but here goes: The reason I argue against audio books is because certain individuals I know don't stop to reflect on life at all, motivated by short term endeavors. I'd wish they do something other than just consume, maybe even painting it's not hard. Probably. It is highly likely - in fact basically guaranteed at one point I would've stopped to make a website on my own anyway, since I had a 'nice website' starting first from neocities (as most do) then actually buying a domain name after Luke Smith more or less said 'just do it' (I forget the exact wording). The word combo 'Luke Smith' seems to short circuit you all - a trigger that automatically solicit negative emotions (perhaps rightfully so, but this means that I can control your emotion just by writing 'Luke Smith'). HTML is good and JavaScript is ok; when done correctly as I demonstrate on one of the tests. I don't have a boner for 4chan and I've literally never posted on it once. I don't look down on anyone for not having a website, and try to encourage people to make one themselves. >you are barely above the people who'll only ever follow instructions and reccomendations their entire lives. If you say so. Share more criticisms of my website, please?

"The reason I argue against audio books is because certain individuals I know don't stop to reflect on life at all" How are those related at all? Seriously, please tell me how having a book dictated to you a sign of not having any active thoughts. Would you rather people drive in complete silence when they don't feel like it? Is that a sign of the (real) intelligentsia to you? "The word combo 'Luke Smith' seems to short circuit you all - a trigger that automatically solicit negative emotions (perhaps rightfully so, but this means that I can control your emotion just by writing 'Luke Smith')" Very eloquent, you type like all the other sniveling kids on 4channel these days trying to sound like le oldfeg. You know there's a reason we find your crowd insufferable, right? Or have you not thought about that one? (Hint: Parroting) "I don't have a boner for 4chan and I've literally never posted on it once." Immediately followed by ">" quoting. Not to mention the numerous 4chan references you make in future blogposts. If you're going to lie, you shouldn't make it so obvious. "If you say so" I say so because there are webrings full of websites exactly like this from kids who came from neocities after they decided they all wanted to be different in the same way at the same time. You all have the same opinions about technology and society, spout the same hashed out "memes", and effectively change nothing. This whole post reeks of empty superiority. Your website is a nice guide for babby's first time outside of youtube, but you act like a chode.

>Seriously, please tell me how having a book dictated to you a sign of not having any active thoughts. I am sure that people can have active thoughts despite listening to audio books. >Would you rather people drive in complete silence when they don't feel like it? Yes. >Is that a sign of the (real) intelligentsia to you? No; silence would encourage active thoughts. Day-dreaming perhaps but something at least. Day-dreaming while driving is no good of course, I am not saying to day-dream while driving, one must pay attention to the road. >Very eloquent, ... Was I wrong? >Immediately followed by ">" quoting. I use ">" because it is understandable what it means and is used in a lot of places; chans, fedi, email. Hm, but I suppose modern email clients hide the ">". I seldom lurk 4chan and often encounter 4chan culture, doesn't mean that post on 4chan. Sometimes I find the memes humorous. >Your website is a nice guide for babby's first time outside of youtube, Thanks >but you act like a chode. Perhaps you're right.
